Lasting Mental Freedom IS Totally Possible

GOYOW

A friend of mine was talking to a relative recently — life, challenges, the usual. At some point, that person said something almost word for word: “I just can’t seem to get out of my own way.”

My friend reported it back to me, half-laughing, because he knew that’s literally the name of a system for living I’d just put out into the world. Serendipitous, right?

She said, “I just can’t seem to get out of my own way.” I thought, WOW.

Whether you’ve never had a single moment of therapy, coaching, or read one self-help book — or you’ve been meditating and doing the work for years — it genuinely doesn’t matter. We all get in our own way sometimes. Nobody’s exempt. That’s the whole starting point.

Here’s what “getting in your own way” actually looks like, day to day: overthinking, perfectionism, negative beliefs, blame, guilt, and worry. Chances are, at least one of those just made you think of yourself, and that’s just some of the most common ways we block ourselves in life.

Perfectionism

We ALL get in our own way. But how do we stop it, replace it, and create lasting mental freedom?

Who hasn’t blamed their spouse? Their boss. Their partner. Their childhood. Leaders. Pick your favorite culprit — we’ve all reached for one.

Join the club.

But here’s the honest question worth sitting with: how has that actually worked out? Turning your focus inward is the ultimate solution.

Not because blame is stupid, or because the people we blame are always innocent. Sometimes they genuinely aren’t. But blame, even when it’s fair, has a strange side effect: it hands over the steering wheel. As long as the problem is them, the solution depends on them changing — and that’s a wait with no promised end date.

Getting out of your own way means you don’t need to blame, wait, or hold back anymore. Here’s the actual truth underneath it: they don’t have any power over you — unless you give it to them. That’s not a guilt trip. It’s the opposite. It’s the most freeing sentence there is, once it actually lands.

This part matters, too: getting out of your own way doesn’t mean trading blaming them for blaming yourself. That’s just the same trap wearing a different hat.

It’s simpler than that. Being exactly yourself is your superpower. But that requires getting out of your own way — not fixing yourself, not becoming someone else. Just clearing out what’s been quietly standing between you and the life you actually want.

Get Out of Your Own Way: A System for Living is built on exactly that: hard-won truths, devouring wisdom from brilliant authors, formal training and a lot of practice. Sharing it is a real joy — fascinating, empowering, genuinely enjoyable — even alongside the slight discomfort that comes with confronting old ideas, old negative thinking, old beliefs. We’re all in the same boat. There is zero shame in admitting that, so how about taking very doable actions that lead to personal liberation?
