If you’ve heard of Reiki but aren’t sure what it actually is, you’re not alone. It tends to get lumped in with things people either fully believe in or roll their eyes at — and I think both responses miss the point.
Here’s the simple version: Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice in which a practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body, with the intention of promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes. It’s gentle, non-invasive, and has no side effects.
Does it work?
Honestly — it depends on what you mean by “work.”
There’s solid evidence that Reiki reduces stress and promotes relaxation. There’s evidence it helps with pain perception and anxiety. Whether it does so through some mechanism of energy flow or simply through the profound effect of intentional, caring human touch — I’m not sure it matters. The result is real.
What I do know from working with people is this: anything that gets you out of your head and into your body, that creates genuine stillness in an overstimulated life, that gives you an hour of quiet and presence — that has value. That’s worth trying.
We are so oriented toward the analytical, the proven, the measurable. Sometimes the most healing things are the ones that don’t fit neatly into that framework.
If you’re curious, try one session with a reputable practitioner. Notice how you feel. That’s all the data you need.
